CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Discovery Language Programs offer 12 to 22 week sessions in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Polish, and Mandarin Chinese to students in grades K – 8th. Class sizes range from 8-14 students that are grouped by age and level of foreign language knowledge. Students usually meet once a week, before or after school or at lunchtime. Twice weekly classes are also available. To determine the interest level at your school, an eight-week pilot program can be offered at any time during the school year.

Discovery Language Programs offer the following languages:

What do students learn at Discovery Language Programs?

The following are some of the subjects covered during the first year:

  • Numbers and Colors
  • Days of the Week
  • Months of the Year
  • Family
  • Descriptive Adjectives
  • Pets and Farm Animals
  • House
  • Cultural aspects of Mexico, France, Germany, Italy or Poland, Food, Clothing, Marketplace, Shopping, School
  • Parts of the Body
  • Sports and Leisure Activities and Auxiliary Verbs (Older students only).

Students advancing further in the program will learn about:

  • Transportation
  • Telling time
  • Expressing feelings and physical situations
  • Seasons and weather
  • Vacations
  • Emergency situations and cultural study of Spain/South America, West Africa/Canada, Austria/Switzerland, Italy, Poland and/or China.
  • Rules of grammar such as:

  • Construction of singular/plural
  • Negative and interrogative
  • Prepositions and commonly used verbs are not stressed specifically, but students are taught the concepts deductively, in a natural way.
  • Advanced Levels 4 & 5 are designed for students who have completed three or four years of the Discovery Language Programs. Levels 4 & 5 offer much more reading and writing than the previous workbooks. This level is excellent preparation for further language learning either in Junior High School or in High School.
